In the first half of 2024, security firms and insurers in South Africa raised alarms over a significant increase in car hijackings.
Contrary to previous trends, bold or unusual car colors no longer seem to deter criminals.
Fidelity ADT reported a notable surge in hijackings within their operational areas during this period, with Gauteng bearing the brunt of the incidents. The Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal also experienced a significant number of hijackings.
Car theft trends
Car theft is often driven by market demand, with specific vehicles targeted for particular purposes. According to Fidelity’s findings, the most hijacked vehicles in South Africa include:
- White Nissan Almera
- White VW Polo
- White Toyota Hi-Ace
- White Nissan NP200
- Grey, blue, or white Toyota CorollaHistorically, white and silver cars were the primary targets, mirroring the popularity of these colors among consumers. However, there’s been a shift in recent years, with criminals increasingly targeting vehicles in non-traditional colors like orange and yellow.
Breaking the stereotype
Bright-colored cars were once thought to be less attractive to hijackers due to their visibility. However, this trend has changed, suggesting a shift in criminal behavior. Criminals may now be less concerned about hiding stolen vehicles, perhaps due to increased confidence or changes in the black market.
The evolving threat
The rise in car hijackings highlights the need for enhanced security measures and vigilance. As the landscape of crime continues to evolve, it’s essential for vehicle owners to be aware of the latest trends and take appropriate precautions to protect themselves and their property.
