Mukuru’s Top Employer certification testament to the fintech’s people-first culture

Next-generation financial services platform Mukuru, which provides a suite of financial services to millions of customers across 60 countries in Africa, Europe, and Asia, surpassed industry benchmarks to become certified as a Top Employer in South Africa, for the period 2024 and 2025.

The recognition positions Mukuru as a globally competitive employer that attracts and retains happy, productive staff.

Mukuru, which has built a strong heritage and footprint over 20 years, starting with remittances and rolling out various value-added products and financial services, recognizes that remaining competitive, and pioneering, in the rapidly evolving fintech industry requires a forward-thinking approach to talent acquisition and retention, says Savina Harrilall, Chief People Officer at Mukuru.

“Our people are our biggest asset as they bring the vision of financial inclusion across the continent to life,” Harrilall says.

“It is a great honour to be certified as a Top Employer in South Africa after just 18 months of engaging on the journey with the Top Employers Institute.

This is a testament to commitment across the organization to develop a people-first, sustainable business and culture.”

Harrilall says it was important to start the journey towards Top Employer certification because the business could then reference its progress against best-in-class global practices.

“The process is tangible and measurable, which means at no point is anything airy-fairy or whimsical. There are clear benchmarks and targets and so the journey can be mapped, tracked and adjusted – ultimately leading to the point where Mukuru became a Top Employer in South Africa, with some measures exceeding the global benchmark,” she says.

The process involves various audits and typically takes 36 months to complete, and so becoming certified in half that time took a lot of commitment and organization-wide hard work, says Harrilall.

“It was a team effort, no doubt underpinned by our core values of: take ownership, innovate and solve continuously.”

The top four categories that saw a marked improvement from the first measurement were for Employee Listening, Employer Branding, Diversity, Equity and Belonging (DEIB) and Performance.

Of significance is that when compared to the Top Employer benchmarks, Mukuru exceeded the benchmarks for Learning and Onboarding.

Aligned to this tracking, specific internal people metrics that also improved over time included, among others, the company’s turnover ratio, which dropped to 12.75%, below the industry benchmark of 15-19%, the average employee tenure, which increased 25% over the course of two years to 3.64 years, first-time pass rates of internal training, which reached 95%, 5% higher than the industry benchmark, and time to hire, which dipped below the industry benchmark of 3.9 months to just 2.5 months.

The certification is not a destination, says Harrilall, but a launchpad to continue innovating around Mukuru’s people aspiration to be recognized as a people-first and people-led organization, underpinned by forward-thinking, inclusivity, a fun culture, and highly engaged employees.

“Our certification and the valuable insights and data derived from working with the Top Employers Institute has ensured that we will continue to enable our people to perform, take ownership of their work, and grow – both professionally and personally,” she says.

“We remain committed to creating a culture where our people thrive and feel like they belong. This will continue to see Mukuru grow and innovate, especially as we extend our aspirations to be a Top Employer across other major regions where we operate.”
