There’s a story behind Huawei’s shift into the foldable space and looking back at the steadfast, relentless innovation from the Huawei camp, the tech giant appears to have set a tone, and that tone leaves a palatable taste of a brand innovative enough to become a major player in the foldable smartphone market.
Huawei has made strides into the foldable smartphone sector and according to a report by Counterpoint Research, in the first quarter of 2024, Huawei’s foldable smartphone market shipments had increased by 257% year on year, with its market share reaching 35%.
This has led to the brand shifting upwards to be among the top three global brands spearheading design for the foldable market.
It was around nine years ago that Huawei BG CTO Li Xialong (Bruce Lee) mentioned a three-fold smartphone concept.
This took years to develop but has mushroomed into a leap to bring forward the release of the Huawei Mate X at the 2019 Mobile Wold Congress in Barcelona to introduce a new form factor in smartphone design. Pretty soon Huawei was spotted to be an industry disruptor as it introduced the Huawei MXT in China.
With investment of over 10% of its sales revenue into research and development, the company’s R&D investment has surpassed CNY 1.11 trillion with more than CNY 100 billion allocated annually to product and technology development.
It appears this strategy works as it bred the interesting new Mate series in the form of the Mate X, the internal folding Mate X2 and the thin boasting Mate X3 as each generation promised impressive technical milestones.
This has led to unimaged designs as folding tech saw new entries in the form of the latest Huawei Mate XT tri-fold smartphone, which caught consumers by surprise.
Innovations such as Kunlun Glass, among other creative solutions for its foldable bring forward a user-centric ethos that consumers appear to welcome as a solution to the foldable market.
This week, Huawei unveiled the all-new Mate X6 foldable in China, sparking immense enthusiasm among consumers. As of November 26, reservations on Huawei’s official online store have already surpassed 1 million. Other brands are already scrambling to recreate the magic of Huawei’s tri-fold smartphone as Huawei prepares to release the HUAWEI Mate X6 outside of home ground. Huawei is set to host a major event in Dubai on December 12, where the Mate X6 and other innovative products are expected to be unveiled,” confirms Huawei.
