Google announces partnership with ALX SA for SA youth

Google and ALX South Africa have joined forces to spark innovation in the hardware and networking industry.

This strategic partnership will culminate in Sub-Saharan Africa’s inaugural Hardware Hackathon on November 1, 2024, at ALX’s Braamfontein hub in Johannesburg.

This collaboration is part of Google’s broader outreach program in South Africa, aimed at deepening its ties with educational institutions. ALX, renowned for its commitment to nurturing tech talent, will work alongside Google to provide upskilling opportunities and introduce graduates to the dynamic tech industry.

Fostering future tech leaders

The partnership seeks to identify and develop the next generation of data center technicians. Participants will gain valuable insights into Google’s Data Center operations while learning essential skills in hardware, operating systems, and networking.

“This partnership reflects Google’s dedication to empowering African youth through technology,” said Elliot Mokoena, Data Center IT Infrastructure Manager at Google. “South Africa boasts a wealth of untapped tech talent, and we want to ensure young people have access to world-class education and exciting career opportunities.”

Divesh Sooka, General Manager of ALX South Africa, added, “ALX is proud to be at the forefront of developing African tech professionals. This partnership enables us to equip young leaders with the skills needed to make an impact on tech innovation across Africa and beyond.”

The hardware hackathon: A gateway to tech careers

The Hardware Hackathon will bring together 20 selected ALX learners for a challenging problem-solving experience. Participants will tackle complex server hardware, Linux, and networking-related challenges, simulating real-world scenarios faced by Data Center Technicians.

The event aims to identify potential candidates for future employment at Google while inspiring a more diverse and inclusive tech industry.

A growing tech community

ALX’s diverse student base provides Google with access to a pool of talented individuals ready to enter the tech industry. Through this partnership, ALX will continue equipping young Africans with the in-demand skills required for the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

“Our collaboration with Google is a major milestone in empowering African youth,” says Sooka. “By hosting the Hardware Hackathon, we are creating a platform for our learners to showcase their talents and contribute to the growth of Africa’s tech ecosystem.”

ALX aims to enable 2 million young professionals to secure meaningful work opportunities by 2030. This partnership amplifies ALX’s mission to provide affordable and accessible tech training programs, shaping the future of South Africa’s youth and economy.
